On more than one occasion, over the course of the last few days … the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been mentioned as one of the responsible parties for yesterday’s NASCAR 400 mile debacle.
To include IMS as a culprit in this disaster of a stock car event is both unfair and unjustified.
The Brickyard has hosted auto racing since 1911 and for just about the last century has been the icon which all other racing venues are measured.
It is no mystery what to expect when you race there.
Is the track surface terribly abrasive?
Absolutely.
Is this new news?
Absolutely not !!!!
The surface of this speedway has been meticulously groomed to accept the groundforce demands of IndyCars running as high as 240 miles per hour for unquestionably the most important race on the planet, the Indianapolis 500.
NASCAR has run 15 Brickyard 400s’ and not one of the previous 14 were conducted with competition yellow flags for the entire race because of tire wear. The track has not changed !
What has changed is NASCAR’s Car of Today (COT) … and for whatever reason NASCAR and Goodyear chose not to sufficiently test for the changing downforce demands of their new car. That was their responsibility to both the fans and the auto racing community and their failure to do so should result in someone in those organizations being held accountable.
Now more than ever … it’s time for people to stop including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when looking to lay blame for the Brickyard 400 … when in fact the management of NASCAR and Goodyear clearly did not do their jobs.
